Antalya-Mersin Highway

Antalya-Mersin Highway

Why is this project so important?

route Antalya-Mersin is considered one of the most important transport corridors in southern Turkey. It connects major tourist, agricultural, and port regions of the Mediterranean. This route is especially important for Mersin: the faster and safer the connection with Antalya and the western resort areas becomes, the greater the mobility of residents, the more attractive tourists are, and the more attractive the real estate investment will be.

It's important to understand: today we're not talking about a single, ready-made "autobahn" highway from Antalya to Mersin, but rather several interconnected road projects. The most important of these are:

  1. Akdeniz Sahil Yolu (Mediterranean Coastal Road Mersin – Antalya);
  2. Çeşmeli–Kızkalesi Otoyolu is a new toll expressway section in Mersin province;
  3. Antalya–Alanya Otoyolu is a new highway on the Antalya side that will improve the eastern direction from Antalya to Alanya.

What exactly is being built between Antalya and Mersin?

1. Akdeniz Sahil Yolu - the main road from Antalya to Mersin

According to official data from the Turkish Ministry of Transport, the total length of Akdeniz Sahil Yolu between Mersin and Antalya is 440 km, and as of November 2024, 404 km have already been completed, while work on the remaining sections is ongoing.

This is the key project for the entire corridor. Its goal is to create a road:

  • Briefly speaking,
  • safer,
  • more convenient for year-round movement,
  • less dependent on dangerous turns, serpentines and narrow coastal sections.

2. The most difficult section in the province of Mersin

One of the most technically challenging sections runs along the mountainous coastal area in the direction of Silifke, Anamur, and the Antalya border. According to the Mersin provincial administration, numerous tunnels and viaducts are being built along this route. Once the project is completed, this challenging stretch of road is expected to be reduced from 264 km to 228 km, saving approximately two hours.

According to the same official statement:

  • the project includes 28 tunnels;
  • their total length in twin-pipe design is about 76 km;
  • are provided 16 viaducts;
  • The total length of viaducts is more than 10 km.

It is also separately indicated that the final section Anamur - the border of the province of Antalya (Gazipaşa), long, 11 km will include 6 tunnels and 7 viaducts.

3. Çeşmeli–Kızkalesi Otoyolu - high-speed section for Mersin

One of the most important projects for the Mersin real estate market is the Çeşmeli–Kızkalesi Otoyolu project, as it directly improves transport accessibility to the western districts of Mersin, including the resort and residential area along the sea. According to KGM:

  • length of the main route - 41 km;
  • length of connecting roads - 11 km;
  • The total length of the project is 52 km.

According to official information from the Ministry of Transport, this project includes:

  • 6 junctions;
  • 7 tunnels with a total length of 10,116 m;
  • 5 viaducts with a total length of 1,647 m;
  • 33 bridges and overpasses with a total length of 2,251 m;
  • 34 underground crossings;
  • 74 culverts.

The most striking indicator is the expected reduction in travel time: after the project's completion, the journey time on this section should be reduced from 2.5 hours to 18 minutes during peak summer periods.

4. Antalya–Alanya Otoyolu – the eastern continuation from Antalya

began in July 2025. the Antalya–Alanya Otoyolu pipelineThis is a separate but very important project for the entire Eastern Mediterranean corridor. According to official data:

  • total length - 122 km;
  • of which 84 km is the main route of the motorway;
  • 38 km - connecting roads;
  • the project includes 7 interchanges;
  • 5 tunnels with a total length of 4,365 m;
  • 16 viaducts with a total length of 5,966 m.

This highway doesn't directly connect Antalya to Mersin, but it strengthens the entire east coast transport system and makes the section from Antalya to Alanya faster and more modern. In the long term, this enhances the role of the entire Antalya-Alanya-Gazipaşa-Anamur-Silifke-Mersin.

How many tunnels and viaducts will there be on the Antalya-Mersin route?

Regarding the main mountainous coastal section between Mersin and Antalya as part of Akdeniz Sahil Yolu, the following have been officially confirmed:

  • 28 tunnels;
  • 16 viaducts;
  • about 76 km of tunnels;
  • more than 10 km of viaducts.

If we consider Çeşmeli–Kızkalesi Otoyolu, it provides for:

  • 7 tunnels;
  • 5 viaducts.

If you look at Antalya–Alanya Otoyolu, the following is planned there:

  • 5 tunnels;
  • 16 viaducts.

How much will the Mersin-Antalya road be shortened?

The most reliable guide from official sources is not a single final figure for the entire trip from the center of Mersin to the center of Antalya, but a reduction in time on the most difficult sections.

According to the Mersin Provincial Administration:

  • after the completion of the project by 36 km;
  • the time saving will be about 2 hours.

project The Çeşmeli–Kızkalesi Otoyolu aims to reduce travel time on this route during peak season from 2.5 hours to 18 minutes. This applies specifically to this specific section and its summer congestion, not to the entire Antalya–Mersin route.

Therefore, it would be more accurate to say this: after the completion of all key sections, the route between Mersin and the western part of the Mediterranean coast of Turkey will become noticeably shorter, safer and more predictable in terms of time, especially in the summer and during holiday periods.

When will the construction of the Antalya-Mersin highway be completed?

Along the entire Antalya-Mersin corridor

The Ministry of Transport and KGM indicate that work is ongoing, and in 2024 it was confirmed that 404 km of the 440 km of road will be ready.

Along the last difficult section at the Mersin-Antalya border

The Mersin provincial administration reported that a tender for the final 11-kilometer Anamur-Gazipaşa had already been held, and the entire road should be completed within the next few years. However, the announcement did not provide a precise date.

By Çeşmeli–Kızkalesi Otoyolu

The project's environmental and design documentation specifies a three-year construction phase, with operation considered after that; the documents also forecast the operational phase to begin in 2027.However, for the website, it's best to be careful: the official project documents assume a three-year construction period, but the actual commissioning date depends on the pace of work and the client's decisions.

How the new highway will affect life in Mersin

Everyday life will become more convenient

The new road isn't just a travel issue. For Mersin residents, it means:

  • faster travel between West Coast and downtown areas;
  • more convenient access to the airport through a connection with the main road network;
  • reduction of seasonal traffic jams;
  • a safer road instead of serpentines and difficult coastal sections.

Tourism will become stronger

Official sources explicitly state that the new highway is expected to increase tourism. This is logical: the easier it is to reach the beach areas of Kızkalesi, Erdemli, Silifke, Anamur, and beyond, the greater the flow of domestic tourists, independent travelers, and rentals.

Trade and agriculture will benefit

The Ministry and the provincial administration emphasize the importance of the road for the transportation of agricultural products and for the regional economy. For Mersin, a city with strong agriculture, logistics, port, and trade sectors, a high-quality road means more efficient transportation and increased business activity.

How the Antalya-Mersin Highway Will Affect Mersin Real Estate Prices

The government doesn't directly publish forecasts for apartment price increases by district, but the impact of transportation projects on the real estate market typically follows a clear chain:

1. The perceived distance is reduced

As the road becomes faster and safer, areas that once seemed remote begin to be perceived as more convenient for living, vacationing, and renting. This is especially important for the western districts of Mersin and the resort area leading toward Erdemli, Kızkalesi, and Silifke.

2. The liquidity of assets is growing

An apartment in a well-connected area is easier to sell and rent. Buyers are not only concerned with the building itself, but also with the commute time to the city center, the sea, the highway, and the airport.

3. Interest in renting is increasing

If tourists and seasonal renters can get around more easily by car, shuttle, or intercity bus, this will increase demand for short-term and long-term rentals in coastal areas.

4. Investment potential is increasing

New residential projects and developments in areas with improved highway access are often the first to respond. This doesn't automatically translate into a price hike for all properties, but for marketable complexes near the sea and in areas with good highway access, the transportation factor usually works to their advantage.

This is why major infrastructure projects—airports, new roads, interchanges, metro systems, and modern logistics—are always viewed by investors as key drivers of market growth. In the case of Mersin, this effect is particularly noticeable, as the city is increasingly attracting the attention of buyers from other regions of Turkey and internationally. This conclusion is based on officially confirmed transportation improvements and the typical logic of the real estate market.

Which districts of Mersin stand to benefit the most?

The greatest impact is typically seen in areas and locations that:

  • are located along the west coast from Cesmeli towards Erdemli;
  • have convenient access to the D-400 and the future high-speed corridor;
  • interesting for summer living, holidays and rent;
  • are already being actively built up with new complexes.

In practical terms, investors may focus their attention on Çeşmeli, Kargıpınarı, Tömük, Arpaçbahşiş, Erdemli, Kızkalesi, and the surrounding areas, as these are the areas where transportation improvements are particularly critical for daily logistics and tourism demand. This is an analytical conclusion, not an official government assessment.

Why this matters to real estate buyers now

Real estate buyers rarely wait until a road is fully completed to begin exploring a neighborhood. The market typically reacts earlier—when construction is already underway, financing is confirmed, and a clear timeline has emerged. For the Çeşmeli–Kızkalesi Otoyolu project, the 2025 financial milestone has been confirmed, and the state has officially confirmed the continuation of work along the entire Mersin–Antalya corridor.

Therefore, for those who are considering an apartment in Mersin for:

  • life by the sea,
  • rest,
  • renting out,
  • long-term investment,

New high-speed road infrastructure is no longer an abstract plan, but a real factor that changes the market.

road corridor Antalya-Mersin is one of the most important infrastructure projects in southern Turkey. It has already been confirmed that:

  • Akdeniz Sahil Yolu between Mersin and Antalya has a total length of 440 km, of which 404 km have already been completed;
  • are being built on difficult mountainous sections 28 tunnels and 16 viaducts;
  • the road in some sections will become shorter by approximately 36 km, and travel time will be reduced by approximately 2 hours;
  • project The Çeşmeli–Kızkalesi Otoyolu will significantly relieve congestion in the west of Mersin and reduce travel time on the congested section from 2.5 hours to 18 minutes.

For the real estate market, this means one thing: Mersin is becoming even more accessible, convenient and interesting for both living and investing.
